Why “IT” can't work on your web site

Don’t get me wrong, I have nothing against “IT” people. I love having them around when my computer gets temperamental or when I can’t figure out why my printer won’t work. But work on a web site, no way.

First let me make this perfectly clear, a web site is not a technological marvel, it is first and foremost a communications tool, which means it’s a marketing tool.

God bless ‘em, but when IT people get involved the focus is on technology, not communicating with customers. A marketer must always be trying to communicate with customers.

The web is not the be all end all, but it is a great way to provide relevant information to your customers and to collect, store and analyze what your customers are saying to you.

Here are some simple marketing tips when designing your web site:

1. Identify the most important things your customers need to know about you and your products/services before they will buy from you
2. Try to distill these down to 4-5 main elements and make these into the main sections of your web site
3. In all of the copy on your web site, make sure you speak to these points and give proof of how you can provide what your customers are looking for
4. Make it easy to contact you

Yes this is an oversimplification of what’s involved in designing a great web site, but if you follow the steps above, you’ll be ahead of 80% of your competitors.

Remember, the secret to great marketing is being relevant. Tell customers what they need to know when they need to know it and deliver on your promise and you’ll have a great web site and business.
