Collaboration

I saw a t-shirt the other day that read “the older I get the better I was”. Since I just turned 40, that t-shirt rings truer everyday.

It got me thinking about business and how when we work with others great things can happen. That t-shirt would read “The more I collaborate the better I am”.

Collaboration can take place between business colleagues, suppliers and customers.

The funny thing is, is that many small business owners are afraid of their customers. They’re afraid to ask them what they really think, or feel about something. They’re afraid of what they might say.

Don’t be.

Working with your customers can help you improve your processes, your products, your services and even your staff.

Taking your best and merging it with someone else’s best can help you create something that can’t be found anywhere else. You can create something that people will want to talk about.

By collaborating you can focus on what you’re strengths are and work with someone who is strong where you’re weak and visa versa. Both you and your collaborator can have the benefit of putting all your energies into the areas you excel at and not wasting time with the things you don’t do well.

Starting today, who could you work with? What other business has similar customers to you, but brings a different and vital set of skills, connections and experience to the table than you have?

What customers do you have that can bring real insight into areas of your business that you’re not taking advantage of?

What supplier can help you reach new markets, develop new products and services or implement better processes?

Collaboration is a two-way street. You must also bring something to the table, but when it happens, the results are far greater than what you could have achieved on your own.

Don’t be limited by geography or even your industry. There are so many people out there to learn from and work with.
